The VMAs have become a launchpad for stunts. If you have gotten past the Britney-Madonna kiss from a few years back, this shouldn't shock you. If you are bothered by stuff like this, then don't watch the VMAs. As for Miley Cyrus, she obviously wants everyone to know that she is no longer the teen you once knew. Message received.

JW upbringing - the gift that keeps on taking
by Simon inthe things they take from you:.
first they take your childhoodthen they take your familyfinally they take your memorieswe all know that you limit your social interactions so you have few school friends who are not jws.
they openly promote this in their magazines and it's repeated at meetings throughout your formative years.

Their shunning policy is a stroke of genius. It's the most useful tool to keep families in, while at the same time making it unbearably difficult for anyone who seeks their own life outside this sect. I think of my step brother, who has recently announced that he is seeking to get reinstated after almost 15 years of being disfellowshipped. After finding no success in keeping something of a relationship with his JW friends and family, and struggling financially, he moved abroad for a job opportunity and to piece his life together with his wife and three children. Then the unthinkable happened. He lost his job, and there he was, in a foreign country with practically no support network. He faced the prospect of being homeless with his spouse and three young children. After living in shelters and on whatever charity others chose to give him, he realised what a desperate plight they were in and finally gave in and called his JW mum, my father's ex-wife. Suddenly he had an apartment ready for him and employment possibilities with some local JWs. There was a condition though. He must get reinstated, his never-a-JW wife must start studying, along with their kids. After such a traumatic experience, JWs actually sounded better than what he had before. I must watch now as he is steering his family into this mess of a religion. But I understand why he made the choice that he did. He simply ran out of options. And that's where the JWs get you. Anyone else wouldn't think twice about a religion they abandoned years ago, but they have families as their active recruiters and agents. Failure to show an interest in coming back will result in the last available doors in your life being shut.

Interesting experience while protesting at district conventions
by theron ware infor three weekends this summer, a friend and i protested outside district assemblies being held in the tucson convention center.
our approach was very low key and completely non-confrontational: we just held our posters and smiled.
this was our experience at the first two assemblies (for the third assembly, see the next paragraph).

Silly of them to make it even worse by forming a human chain. Unnecessary. Most JWs are scared enough and will stay as far as they can. But if there's any hint of a confrontation, people will look. It's human nature.

Is The WTS Building Beth Sarim 2 ?
by metatron ini continue to puzzle over the future direction the watchtower is taking.
it seems very strange.. let's review: they are selling everything off in brooklyn, raking in huge sums from that real estate and building heavily in a fairly isolated part of upstate ny.. why?.
it may be classified as a country club (legally).

I believe it is being done for several reasons, the main two I will list here.
The properties are just worth too much to be running factories and housing Bethelites in. It's like San Quentin Prison. That property alone is worth millions if they just tore the prison down. Developers would be tripping over one another to build condos on such prime bayfront property. A new prison could be built in a much more remote location on land that is insanely cheap. CT Russell moved to Brooklyn to put an international stamp on his movement. That has already been achieved, and nowadays in the information age you don't necessarily need to be running things out of a huge metropolis to get noticed. The cost of living is much cheaper where they are headed to. Straight up business decision.
For all their apocalyptic rants about the Great Tribulation and Armageddon, New York is the last place I would want to be if I believed what they believed.

The oldest of the lot was only 8 years old when Rutherford died. Therefore, no one who is a leader today knew either of the first two leaders of the WTS. These are all Knorr/Franz men. So Russell and Rutherford are distant, almost mythical Joseph Smith type characters for these men. I think that's why the first three presidencies were so different in tone. Each knew his predecessor and didn't agree with a few things that were done. Rutherford had to have known that Russell was a bit of an eccentric and that his dates were shit. Knorr and Franz knew that Rutherford had his own hand in false prophecies and was an arrogant drunk. And the current crop know all about 1975 and the Society's standard line that it was a few overzealous brothers who preached the end. These are men who grew up within the organisation idolising Franz and Knorr, while thinking wonderful things about the others. The organisation is their God and they know no other. They will protect this organisation no matter what. That's the striking part to me about their personalities.

In a pickle - The U.S. and Egypt - What would you do?
by Glander in1. cut off funding to the military, stand back and watch, aka, the ron paul position.
2. back up the military in putting down the muslim brotherhood ( the mb being the incubator for extremist jihadists).
3. back the muslim brotherhood (the us backed the morsi/muslim brotherhood originally).

The first option. I support the social Darwinist position on this. There never should have been such military aid. If you have to bribe the leaders of one nation into accepting peace, then there really isn't any peace that's sustainable. Finally, military aid is the most irresponsible form of assistance anyone can give to a nation in one of the world's tulmultuous regions. This is an Egyptian problem and it must be solved by Egyptians. It is unfortunate that there is violence and killings there, but intervention is only going to make it worse.

Revelation Climax book - what are the most ridiculous claims in it?
by RayPublisher ini got to thinking about all the strange interpretations in the old revelation climax book now that i have perused it again on pdf.
(thanks atlantis!).
does anyone care to toss in their two cents on what are the most outrageous and/or ridiculous claims in it?.

They were doing their best Joseph Smith impression when they directly tied a vision someone wrote about on Patmos circa 95-6 AD to an event and location in America. I skipped over those parts. I couldn't comment on something so blatantly ridiculous.
Freddy must have had a huge bromance with the Judge if he thought to include him in the prophecy of the apocalypse.

JWs hardly rate anywhere on the public consciousness. Many don't even know that Prince and the Williams sisters are active members, or that Michael Jackson grew up as one. JWs are generally known as this strange sect that knocks on people's doors. I have found that the few times anyone has known anything in detail about JWs were when they had a friend who was one or who had been disfellowshipped. If a poll of the public were conducted, JWs would probably rate up there, but not as the worst. We know it to be the 'worst' because we all have had our experiences in with and know how destructive it is. With that in mind, you never hear of people actually being killed for leaving the JW religion as we do often with Muslims. That would be where I would start and then move my way down.
